While it seemed to be a double black eye experience for Gloria Ortinez to both be accused of bringing an ammunition in her luggage that delayed her return to Hong Kong and lose her job there eventually, it appears to be heading to a happy ending we all are wishing for.
According to Susan Ople, an advocate for overseas Filipinos, who accompanied Nanay Gloria in her return to Hong Kong over the weekend, a touching story that many domestic workers can easily relate to just happened.
They were about to pick up remaining belongings of Nanay Gloria from the house of her now ex-employer as her employment contract was reportedly terminated. The parting was described as bitter, and required the presence of Hong Kong police.
However, Nanay Gloria was not allowed to come in, and parents reportedly did not allow her to see her ward whom she took care for the past 15 years since he was born. But the child cried and insisted that he be granted the chance to hug Nanay Gloria for the last time. Despite the parents’ apparent resistance to let the two say goodby to each other, the child managed to meet Nanay Gloria, using the other elevator available.
But that was not the end of it.
The following day, Nanay Gloria received a phone call from the ex-employer asking if they could talk. The parents became worried their child did not get to sleep, wouldn’t eat breakfast or dinner, and has been crying throughout the night. Shortly after, the ex-employer offered to re-hire Nanay Gloria, grant her long service payment and pick up where they left off before she went to the Philippines, and got stuck in the ‘tanim bala’ scheme.
