Two Filipinos have died in India due to COVID-19 this week as cases surge in the south Asian nation anew. The country’s health care system is overwhelmed with the situation according to the Philippine envoy to New Delhi.
Ramon Bagatsing Jr., who is now the Philippine Ambassador to India disclosed that there are about 2,000 Filipinos in the said country of which around 80 percent are housewives, while more or less 70 are working in managerial capacity.
Of the number, 20 of them were infected with COVID-19 and are in isolation. The Philippine Embassy is trying to hand essential supplies to them and unfortunately, 2 of them died, he added. They were identified to be among the managerial level people.
Philippine authorities in India are doing the necessary steps to bring the remains of those who died back to the country. However, flights from India going to the Philippines, which connect via United Arab Emirates are suspended.
The armed forces of India are now tasked to help tackle the COVID-19 crisis, as nations including Germany, Great Britain and the United States made pledges to send medical aid in the efforts to contain the emergency which now overwhelms the country’s hospitals.
As of April 26, India reported more that 352,000 new COVID-19 cases, a new global record for rise in daily cases for the fifth straight day. The record surpassed the numbers tallied by the United States during the height of its pandemic last year. More than 2,800 deaths are also reported over a 24-hour period in India, an all-time high. At the moment hospitals continue to run out of oxygen supplies and beds.
