How OFWs in Japan Can Receive 100,000 Yen Government Handout

Foreign residents in Japan, including Filipino workers, who are listed on the country’s Basic Resident Register as of April 27, 2020 are eligible for Y100,000 (P47,349) handout by the government as part of its economic response amid the coronavirus health crisis.

The basic requirement for eligibility is that a recipient must be a holder of a valid visa of at least three months.

Applications and payment transfers will be done without human contact to prevent infections and minimize clerical work at municipal offices.

Here are the steps to avail of this cash handout:

1. The Head of each household will receive an application form from a municipality. Information such as name, date of birth, home address, and bank account number along with copies of ID and bank account information. The sum is then transferred to the listed account.

2. If the head of the household cannot apply due to poor health or other reasons, someone else can fill out the form.

4. Recipients who don’t have a bank account are allowed to submit the form in-person at a nearby municipal office and receive the cash assistance at a later date.

5. Each municipality decides when to start accepting applications and when to distribute the money. The applications will be accepted over a period of three months.

6. Applicants will start receiving the handouts from May onwards.

Fraud alert

The Consumer Affairs Agency says it expects scams related to the handout. It says to be wary of suspicious phone calls and emails requesting bank account pin numbers and other information.

Recipients do not need to use an ATM or go to the bank to apply for or receive the handout. Any phone calls or emails saying otherwise are part of scams. Do not respond.
