A Filipina helper accused of killing her own baby was remanded in custody by a local court in Hong Kong Thursday as prosecution needed time to determine if she recently gave birth.
Aileen Ongcoy Grado, 36, was charged on Wednesday with one count of infanticide, according to South China Morning Post report.
Grado was arrested on Monday in connection with the discovery of a dead baby boy found inside a toilet in Tsuen Wan on April 4.
The prosecution alleged that Grado caused the death of the child on March 21 by deliberate omission to provide proper care. In her first court appearance, she was not required to enter a plea.
According to the report, the crime allegedly took place at Lido Garden, a residential estate on Castle Peak Road in Tsuen Wan.
Prosecutor So Kin-ho requested a four-week adjournment, pending a medical report requested from court to ascertain whether the defendant was recently pregnant and had given birth. The judge also voiced objection to the defendant’s bail application.
Analysis using DNA test was also needed to determine the cause of the boy’s death.
Magistrate Cheang Kei-hong remanded Grado in custody as he adjourned the case for mention on May 12.
