Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas visited Hong Kong to reach out to the city’s Filipino voters yesterday.
Accompanied by wife Korina Sanchez, running mate Rep. Leni Robredo, and LP senatorial candidate Risa Hontiveros, Roxas compared the “Daang Matuwid” system of governance to building “step by step” a First World society such as Hong Kong in the Philippines.
“I’m not saying that daang matuwid has now reached paradise, what I’m saying is we have come a long way. It’s like we’re building Hong Kong,” Roxas was quoted by Inquirer.net as saying to a group of Filipino professionals and domestic helpers in a restaurant in Central district.
“It will not happen overnight but it cannot be denied that we’ve already done many things and our economy will grow faster in the coming years,” he added.
Robredo, on her part, promised a full review of government policies that relate more to overseas Filipino workers such as the collection of excessive training fees that leave domestic helpers heavily indebted. Robredo also assured that she will look into the issuance of overseas employment certificates and collection of terminal fees.
Meanwhile, supporters of rival presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte staged a rally at nearby Edinburgh Place which featured the Mocha Girls. Social media posts show Duterte’s rally dwarfed the number of Roxas supporters, clad in yellow outfit.
On the other hand, Roxas was heckled by members of party-list group Migrante as he went around greeting OFWs at nearby HSBC building.
Hong Kong has an estimated 90,000 registered Filipino voters. Along with other overseas locations, registered voters may start casting their ballots on Saturday, April 9.
